FRAGMENT EINER HEILIGEN SIPPE (1510-1520)

MASTER OF SIGMARINGEN (PAINTER FAMILY STRÜB IN VERINGERSTADT, DISTRICT OF SIGMARINGEN) Active circa 1500-1530 FRAGMENT OF A HOLY KINSHIP (1510-1520) Oil tempera on soft wood panel (fragment of a formerly larger panel). 76 x 47 cm (F. 83,5 x 55,5 cm). Upper base added ca. 7 cm later, some old rest., old retouching. Frame. Dr. Konrad writes in his comprehensive expert opinion: 'There is not the slightest doubt that the Veringenstadt painter's workshop with the formerly used notation Master of Sigmaringen is the author. In particular, the Child Jesus with the curly head is found in depictions of children in other paintings by these artists (Fig.8). If we speak here of the plural of the not-name as 'The Masters of Sigmaringen', it is because it is not possible to decide whether Hans or his brother Jakob, was the decisive painter and the one who shaped the workshop style. As in most painter's workshops of the 15th and 16th centuries, the painter did not work in personal union but in association with other employees, who basically had to adapt to one style. This would become clear on the basis of different qualities in this oeuvre as well. Nevertheless, the fixation of a quality level on one of the two Strübs remains problematic, as Anna Moraht-Fromm emphasises.
