The Dutch artist Michiel van Mierevelt, son of a goldsmith and engraver, quickly established himself as a successful portrait painter during his studies in Utrecht. He later became the court painter to Prince Moritz von Oranien. During his lifetime, he painted many important figures of wealth, including the princely couple Amalie zu Solms-Braunfels and Frederik Hendrik von Oranien. Amalie zu Solms-Braunfels was an important figure of the 17th century. She played a significant role, particularly in the political events of her time. She was also highly esteemed for her diplomatic skills, outstanding intelligence and education.
