Description
DOMESTIC ALTAR IN THE FORM OF AN ANCIENT TEMPLE Rome, probably 1st century AD. Probably marble, carved. H. 48 cm, 26 cm, D. 12 cm (with double newer plinth: H. 55 cm, W. 34 cm, D. 17 cm). Partly dam., rest., missing parts, weathering losses. Provenance: Collection of Monsignor Dr. theol. Ludwig Voelkl (10 June 1899 Dürnbach - 25 October 1985 in Rome). Papal house prelate and director of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society. Buried in the priestly crypt of the Archconfraternity 'Santa Maria della Pieta' at Campo Santo Teutonico near St Peter's in Rome. Inherited by the family, then in a private collection in south-west Germany until today. According to the owners, Monsignor Dr Ludwig Voelkl was significantly involved in the excavations under St Peter's Basilica in Rome in the late 1940s.
