Description
GROUP OF SEVEN OIL LAMPS, A TAZA AND A NAIL Rome, probably 1st century AD. Fired clay, partially glazed black or red-brown. Oil lamps: l. 14 cm (largest), l. 6 cm (smallest) / taza: h. 6 cm, d. 13.5 cm / nail: l. 16.5 cm. Partly damaged, signs of wear due to age. Provenance: Collection of Monsignor Dr. theol. Ludwig Voelkl (10 June 1899 Dürnbach - 25 October 1985 in Rome). Papal house prelate and director of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society. Buried in the priestly crypt of the Archconfraternity 'Santa Maria della Pieta' at Campo Santo Teutonico near St Peter's in Rome. Inherited within the family, then in a private collection in south-west Germany until today. Expertise: According to the owners, Monsignor Dr Ludwig Voelkl was significantly involved in the excavations under St Peter's Basilica in Rome in the late 1940s.
