Description
GRETE BUDDE 1883 Luckenwalde - 1967 Halle an der Saale HOCKING BUNNY Bronze, brown patina, on a rectangular plinth (h. 1 cm). H. 10, w. 11.5, d. 5.5 cm, weight approx. 0.76 kg. Monogrammed 'GB' and dated '1923' on the reverse, inscribed 'N. V. Hoedhaar Rotterdam' on the front. Grete Budde (1883-1967), born Margarete Goldschmidt, was an important Jewish German sculptor of the early 20th century who pursued an impressive artistic career despite adverse circumstances, including persecution by the National Socialists. She received her training from renowned artists such as Fritz Klimsch, Max Kruse, Aristide Maillol and Auguste Rodin, and created numerous portrait busts, small sculptures and medals, preferring bronze as her main material. After the Second World War, she was able to resume her work and received several commissions, with over 90 of her works documented, including important portrait busts of scholars. Part.
