HANS MÜLLER 1873 Vienna - 1937 ibid. EQUESTRIAN MONUMENT OF THE KNIGHT CANGRANDE I. DELLA SCALA Bronze, light patina, on a rectangular plinth (h. 2 cm). Overall h. 45, w. 36, d. 13 cm, weight approx. 9.69 kg. On the reverse of the plinth foundry mark 'KR' and inscribed 'M. Sch'. Cangrande I della Scala (1291-1329) was an important ruler of Verona from the della Scala family, who was known for his military successes and the expansion of his influence in northern Italy. He was a close friend and patron of the poet Dante Alighieri, who immortalized him in the "Divine Comedy". The equestrian statue of Cangrande I della Scala shows the knight sitting on a horse in full armor, holding a sword in one hand and the reins resolutely in the other.
