JOHAN JUSSI RICKHARD MÄNTYNEN 1886 Helsinki - 1978 'SKOGSSTÄMNING' (STANDING MOOSE) 1927 Bronze, dark patina, on a rectangular plinth. H. 24, w. 11,5, d. 18,5 cm, weight approx. 3,46 kg. Signed 'J. Mäntynen' and dated '1927' on the front. Jussi Mäntynen (1886-1978) was a Finnish sculptor who specialized in depictions of animals. His works are characterized by a lifelike and sensitive depiction of wild animals, especially birds and mammals. Mäntynen was an important representative of animal sculpture in Finland and combined his knowledge of zoology with artistic skill to make his sculptures appear lively and dynamic.
