PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR 1841 Limoges - 1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer 'TÊTE DE COCO' (HEAD OF CLAUDE 'COCO' RENOIR) Bronze, black patina on a square marble base (h. 15 cm). Overall h. 41, w. 17.5, d. 18 cm, weight approx. 15.54 kg. Signed 'Renoir' on the side, numbered '1/30' and foundry stamp 'Cire C.Valsuani Perdue' on the reverse. Conceived around 1908 and cast in a numbered edition of 30 around 1928. Fully sculptural depiction of a portrait bust of Renoir's youngest son, Claude, called 'Coco'. Min. bumped and rubbed, base min. bumped. Literature: J. Meier-Graefe, Renoir, Leipzig, 1929, no. 406, plaster cast illustrated p. 402 and P. Haesaerts, Renoir Sculpteur, Brussels, 1947, pp. 19-20 illustrated on pls. IV and XXXVI. Provenance: Acquired in Paris in the early 1970s.
