The painting belongs to the artist's Berlin period. The year 1840 is listed in the Thieme-Becker Künstlerlexikon as the last year of the artist's participation in exhibitions at the Berlin Academy, after which he moved to Kassel and lived alternately in Breslau and Waldenburg.
