The original first edition of 'Der Spiegel' was published on January 4, 1947 with the cover story "With the hat in hand - becoming a liberated country. Austria's envoy Dr. Kleinwächter in front of the White House". It consisted of 22 pages, cost one mark and had a circulation of 15,000 copies. The cover shows the Austrian diplomat Kleinwächter. In addition to foreign and domestic policy issues, the topic of culture took up almost as much space in 1947: the articles included, among others, the actresses Joana Maria Gorvin and Marlene Dietrich, Queen Nefertiti and "Alfred" Einstein.
