Description
AN IMPORTANT EXTENDED DEISIS FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, 2nd half 15th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The composition divided into compartments arranged over two registers. The icon presents itself as a complex theological composition, depicting Christ as the central Redeemer, accompanied by prophets and saints, including John the Baptist, the Archangel Gabriel, King Solomon, and possibly the Prophet Micah. The architectural background and the finely modeled faces reflect the stylistic development of Russian icon painting in the late Middle Ages. The figures are arranged in a harmonious composition, characteristic of large altar or iconostasis icons. Special attention has been given to the vividly colored garments and the subtle modeling of the faces. The use of gilding and intricate ornamentation enhances the solemn and sacred nature of the artwork. The background stripped to gesso, partially restored. 97.4 x 43.5 cm.
