AN IMPORTANT MILITARY ICON: A LARGE TRIPTYCH DEPICTING ST. NICHOLAS OF MYRA AND THE MANDYLION, FLANKED BY STS. OLGA AND ALEXANDER NEVSKY Russian, circa 1914 (icons), Russian, Moscow, Nikolay Gratchev, 1908-1917 (oklad) Oil. The silver parcel-gilts oklad finely engraved and chased, the border decorated with scrolling foliage. The robes delicately repoussé and chased, the applied haloes enamelled with a floral ornament in opaque pastel shades. Marked throughout with assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark 'NG' in Cyrillic. An also marked plaque is affixed at the lower center, bearing a Cyrillic inscription: "300th Infantry Regiment Zaslawskij, July 28, 1914." 51.3 x 73.3 cm (extended). Archival records indicate that the recruits of the 300th Zaslawskij Regiment were equipped with rifles and ammunition on July 26, 1914, at the Brest-Litovsk fortress. On July 27, the regiment's commander sent a telegram to the headquarters of the 75th Infantry Division and the district command, reporting the successful completion of mobilization. On July 28, the regiment was inspected by General V.A. Leiming, commandant of Brest-Litovsk, before receiving its baptism of fire in the Battle of Galicia and the Warsaw-Ivangorod operation. The 300th Zaslawskij Regiment continued to participate in further combat until the end of World War I.
