Description
A FINE ICON SHOWING THE MANDYLION WITH A SILVER-GILT OKLAD Russian, Moscow, Circle of the Armoury Chamber, late 17th century (icon), Russian, Moscow, 1762 (oklad) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Christ's melancholic gaze directed towards the beholder, his realistic features devoid of sharp outlines, instead modelled with a variety of shades. The preparatory base of the flesh painted in olive, the shape and volume of the characteristics defined with red and beige hues, the shadows in tones of brown. Overlaid with a finely chased and embossed silver-gilt oklad. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, alderman's mark and master's mark. Minimally restored, damages to the edge of the oklad. 31.5 x 27.8 cm.
