Description
A FINE ICON SHOWING THE POKROV (THE PROTECTING VEIL OF THE MOTHER OF GOD) Russian, 17th century Tempera on wood panel with double kovcheg. Against the background of a large church. The upper part showing the Mother of God holding an open scroll, in the left corner the image of Christ. In the lower register appears St. Romanos singing a hymn framed by the Byzantine Emperor Leo and Zoe, and Andrew the Holy Fool pointing out to his pupil Epiphanius the appearance of the Mother of God. The figures rendered with classical proportions, their faces painted in great detail. Minimally restored. 31 x 27.6 cm.
