A FINE ICON SHOWING THE DESCENT INTO HELL Russian, Pskov, 2nd half 16th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Against a circular mandorla Christ trampling on the broken gates of the Underworld, leaning to his right and pulling Adam out of his sarcophagus, Eva stretching her hands towards the Saviour while raising herself from her own tomb, in the foreground the winged Devil prostrating in his grave. The icon executed traditionally mainly with complimentary green and red nuances, the background with traces of gold. On the border appearing the New Testament Trinity and seven selected saints and martyrs. Partially restored, damages to the edges. 34.5 x 30 cm.
