Description
A FINE DOUBLE-SIDED TABLETKA SHOWING THE FIRST COUNCIL OF NICAEA AND FIVE SELECTED SAINTS Russian, 17th century Finely painted in great detail, the haloes made of gold. The Emperor Constantine, at the centre of the composition, is surrounded by groups of bishops, (Orthodox on the left and heterodox on the right), which includes Saints Nicholas, Basil and Athanasius, he is shown again below, conversing with the bishops, in the lower-right corner Arius, with his entrails spilling out, is depicted in the public lavatory where he died, in the lower left corner, is depicted the vision of Saint Peter, Bishop of Alexandria. On the reverse side, a full-figure depiction of Sts. Blaise, Paisius, Clement, John the Warrior, and Basil is shown. The background and border stripped to gesso, minimally restored. 23.5 x 19.8 cm (with later frame).
