A SMALL ICON SHOWING STS. COSMAS AND DAMIAN Greek, 18th century Tempera on wood panel. Finely executed against a golden background. Full-length frontal depiction of the two saints and martyrs Cosmas (the Adorned) and Damian (the Conqueror), facing the viewer, dressed in magnificent, richly ornamented garments. According to tradition, Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers and physicians. They treated the poor and animals free of charge and converted many people to Christianity. The edges minimally chipped. 25 x 16.7 cm.
