A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING THE ENTHRONED CHRIST 'KING OF THE KINGS' FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, 18th century Tempera on wood panel. The background made of silver, covered by a golden lacquer. In addition to his tripartite halo Christ bearing a crown, the latter in combination with the cruciform pallium and the sakkos (instead of his usual himation) corresponding to his appearance as the 'High Priest', seated on an elaborately carved throne with high rounded back. The robe of Christ, who is depicted as a crowned High Priest, is entirely adorned with floral motifs. The throne is surrounded by Cherubim and Seraphim. Vertical crack minimally restored. 126 x 93 cm.
