Description
A MONUMENTAL ICON OF THE PETCHERSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD (OF THE KIEV CAVES) Russian, circa 1880 Tempera on wood panel. The Mother of God shown enthroned, flanked by Saints Antony and Feodosii of Pechersk and the archangels Michael and Gabriel. The monastic saints are holding unfolded scrolls with the texts of lessons. Executed delicately with ample gold against a punched background, the foliate border emulating contemporary enamelled decoration. Restored. 154 x 99 cm.
