Description
A MONUMENTAL SIGNED AND DATED ICON OF THE APOSTLE SIMON THE ZEALOT FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, Moscow, Nikolay Sergeevitch Emelianov, dated 1912 Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The halo made of gold. Vertical cracks minimally restored. Signed in Cyrillic and dated on the lower right edge. 89.5 x 38 cm. The icon painter Nikolai Emelianov, one of the official court painters alongside Gurianov, Chirikov, and Dikariev, is best known for his work on icons commissioned by the Imperial family between 1909 and 1917. Emperor Nicholas II personally selected Emelianov and Dikariev to create icons in the 17th-century style for the iconostasis of the newly constructed Imperial Feodorovski Sobor at Tsarskoye Selo. Emelianov's signed works are highly regarded, and several of his icons are preserved in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, attesting to his significant contribution to Russian religious art of the early 20th century.
