A MONUMENTAL AND FINE ICON OF THE FEODOROVSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, Kostroma, mid 18th century Tempera on wood panel. Finely executed against a golden background. A Cyrillic inscription at the bottom reads: "This wondrous image of the Feodorovskaya Mother of God was solemnly transferred to Kostroma in 1259 (6747 in the Byzantine calendar) and has since been venerated as a great sacred relic. It was confirmed as the protective image of the city of Kostroma by Tsar Michael Romanov and the clergy. Honored by the Grand Prince Vasily Georgievich of Kostroma and Galich, as well as by Grand Prince Vladimir Alexandrovich of Novgorod." Partially restored. 64.8 × 49.3 cm. This impressive icon depicts the Feodorovskaya Mother of God, one of the most revered icons in Russia and the patroness of the House of Romanov. The icon was masterfully painted in a Baroque style, with vivid colours and intricate gilding. Particularly striking are the dynamic rays of light on the halo, emphasizing the miracle of the apparition, as well as the richly decorated gold and silver ornaments. The inscription at the bottom provides insight into the historical and spiritual significance of the depiction. The Feodorovskaya Mother of God is considered a miraculous icon and played a crucial role in imperial coronations. She was venerated in Kostroma as early as 1239 and is said to have blessed the young Michael Romanov at his enthronement in 1613. From that point on, the icon gained national importance and was highly esteemed by the Russian Imperial family.
