EMMANUEL TZANES 1610 Rethymno - 1690 Venice (attributed) A VERY FINE ICON OF CHRIST 'THE FEARSOME EYE' Cretan, 17th century Hardwood panel. Egg tempera on gesso ground, gold background, nimbus ornately punched. This icon depicts Christ as a half-figure with a stern gaze, following the Byzantine Deesis tradition. Stylistically, it is closely related to the Cretan School, particularly to the works of Emmanuel Tzanes and Emmanuel Lampardos. The penetrating expression, precise line work, and delicate modeling of the face indicate a high-quality painting. Minimally restored. 29 x 25.6 cm.
