A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING CHRIST OF SORROWS Greek, Crete, Circle of Michael Damaskenos, 2nd half 16th century Tempera on wood panel. Depiciting Christ crowned with thornes. Painted with bright colours, the folds of garments in lighter tones. Delicate white brushstrokes emphasise the facial features. On gold background. The punched halo decorated with scrolls. Minor areas of retouching. 36.5 x 27.5 cm / 78.5 x 63 cm (with later gilded wooden frame).
