A VERY FINE AND LARGE ICON SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD OF YAROSLAVL Russian, 16th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Portrayed half-length, in three quarter-view, Christ positioned in a contrapostal manner in his Mother's arms, pressing his face against his Mother's cheek and holding her chin. Finely painted in the traditional style with sombre colours, their garments highlighted with ample chrysography. Four selected saints in bishop's and monk's attire on the borders. The backgrund and border stripped to gesso, minimally restored. On the reverse old label 'Madonna of the Wolga (Lady of Tenderness with four Saints Novgorod school 16th century Imperial Exhibit London' and inventory number '687 [...] STUDIOS'. 43.7 x 34.7 cm.
