A FINE AND LARGE ICON SHOWING ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER AS ANGEL OF THE DESERT Greek, 17th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The halo ornately punched. The saint with large red wings, wearing the raiment of skins and a chiton, holding an inscribed scroll and cross, standing on a rocky cliff. The Forerunner's head in a bowl near his feet, a tree to the left symbolising his sermon of repentance. Executed in bold colours, the background gilded. The border partially restored. 44.4 x 32.6 cm.
