A FINE ICON SHOWING THE PRAISE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD SURROUNDED BY THE AKATHISTOS HYMN Russian, Moscow or Solvychegodsk, Stroganov School, 17th century Tempera on wood panel with double kovcheg. The Mother of God enthroned at center, with Christ Emmanuel above, surrounded by Old Testament Prophets holding scrolls and symbols foretelling her acts. The central painting and the images of the border depicting the epithets used for the Virgin in the Akathistos Hymn set into a later panel (vrezka). Partially restored. 30.6 x 26.2 cm.
