Description
A VERY LARGE ICON SHOWING THE SYNAXIS OF THE MIRACLEWORKING SAINTS OF THE PECHERSKY MONASTERY IN KIEV South West Russian, Kaluga, circa 1800 Tempera on wood panel. The haloes and wings of the angels made of gold. The icon showing on the left and on the right side the Kievan Miracleworkers, the halos meticulously inscribed with the according names, in the upper part two angels holding the icon of the Dormition of the Mother of God, in the centre the famous church of the Dormition, below St. Vladimir, the converter of the Kievan Rus to Christianity and his two sons Boris and Gleb, Russia's first martyrs, in the foreground the two founders of the Kievo-Pecherksi Monastery, the monks Anthony and Feodosy. Minor vertical crack minimally restored. 54 x 47.6 cm.
