A VERY RARE ICON OF THE COUNCIL OF NICAEA Bulgarian, 19th century Tempera on panel. The garments and haloes made of gold. The edges minimally chipped. 30.3 x 21.9 cm. The Council of Nicaea (325 AD) laid the foundation for Christian doctrine. In addition to key theological questions, the veneration of holy images was discussed, which later became highly significant for Christian iconography.
