A RARE ICON SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD 'SURETY OF SINNERS' Russian, Vetka, 2nd half 19th century Tempera on wood panel. The background made of silver, covered by a golden lacquer. The center depicting the Mother of God holding the Christ Child in her left arm encircled by an inscription on the icon ''I am the surety of sinners for my son who has entrusted me to hear them, and those who bring me the joy of hearing them will receive eternal joy through me''. The basis of the icon is to be found in the Akathist to the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos: 'Rejoice, You Who offer Your hands in surety for us to God'. Symbols around the Virgin and Child depicting the epithets used for the Virgin in the Akathistos Hymn. Two selected saints on the borders: Guardian Angel and St. Ksenia. Partially restored. 34.1 x 31 cm.
