A RARE AND VERY FINE SET OF SIX MONUMENTAL ICONS FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, last third of the 18th century Tempera on wood panels. The haloes made of gold. The icons depict the Nativity of the Mother of God, the Presentation in the Temple, the Annunciation, the Baptism of Christ, the Transfiguration, and the Entry into Jerusalem. The compositions follow classical Russian iconography, yet incorporate elements of Western Classicism, reflected in the composition and the modeling of the figures. The arrangement of the figures within architectural settings is harmoniously balanced, enhancing the solemnity of the scenes. The icons are executed in exceptionally fine painting, with faces modeled in warm brown tones, highlighted with red shading for depth and plasticity. Minor vertical cracks, minor losses, minimally restored. 90 × 51.5 cm.
