A WEDDING GIFT TO PRINCESS MARIA VLADIMIROVNA LEVASHOVA: A CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL PENDANT DEPICITNG THE MADONNA Russia, St. Petersburg, Sasikov, 1881 Gouache, with silk backing. the silver-gilt mount decorated with cloisonné enamel. On the reverse engraved dedication inscription in Cyrillic: 'To Maria Vladimirovna Vyazemskaya from M. I. Velyaminova, September 12, 1881.'. Marked with city hallmark, 84 standard and master's mark 'SAZIKOV' in Cyrillic with Imperial warrant. 10.5 cm long. Countess Maria Vladimirovna Vyazemskaya (1859-1938) was the daughter of Count Vladimir Vasilyevich Levashov and Countess Olga Viktorovna Panina. Her father was Count Vladimir Vasilyevich Levashov, an artillery general, participant in the Crimean War, member of the 'Baranov Commission', military governor of Kutaisi (1867-1874) and mayor of Odessa (1874-1878). Her mother, Countess Olga Viktorovna Levashova (née Panina), was a lady-in-waiting and daughter of the Minister of Justice Count V.N. Panin and Countess N.P. Panina (née Tizengauzen). She ran a liberal salon in St Petersburg. The wedding of Maria Vladimirovna Levashova and Leonid Dmitrievich Vyazemsky took place on 9 September 1881 in Saint Petersburg in the Simyonovskaya Church on Mohovaya Street. For many years, this church belonged to the court office. Solemn services were held here before the Kazan Cathedral was built, attended by the entire city clergy and the capital's elite. Maria Vladimirovna was the last (in the female line) of the Count Levashov dynasty. Her youngest son, Vladimir Leonidovich, was allowed to call himself Prince Vyazemsky Count Levashov by the highest confirmation of the State Council on 17 May 1895. After the revolution in 1919, Maria Vladimirovna emigrated to France with her youngest children Lydia and Vladimir, where she died in Paris in 1938.
