MEMENTO MORI 'DEATH WITH SENSE AND THE HUMAN BEING' Southern Germany/Austria, probably second half of the 19th century. Wood, carved in relief, polychrome painted and gilded, on a plinth. H. 80, w. 32, d. 22 cm. The two-part depiction "Memento Mori" shows death, embodied by a skeleton symbolizing the transience of life and the inevitability of death. In contrast, man is depicted, a symbol of the finite nature of earthly existence, who in his transient existence is confronted with inevitable fate. Part. Losses of frame, best. and rest.
