MEMENTO MORI HEAD AND SKULL Probably Austria, around 1750 Wood, carved in full relief, polychrome painted. H. 18.5, w. 17, d. 22 cm, weight approx. 1 kg. Fully sculpted depiction of a man's head carved on one side as a bone skull. This extraordinary memento mori wood sculpture shows a detailed carved male head on the left side, while the right side depicts a skull. The depiction symbolizes the duality of life and death and reminds us of the transience of life's presence, typical of the Baroque exploration of mortality.
