Description
RELIEF THE DESCENT FROM THE CROSS OF JESUS Flanders or Westphalia, 16th century. Oak, carved in relief, sculpturally carved, stained dark, flattened on the back. H. 48, w. 38, d. 15 cm, weight approx. 6,17 kg. The Flemish relief artfully depicts the moment when Christ is taken down from the cross. The composition of the relief is carefully crafted to capture the grief and devotion of the figures involved - from the grieving Mary holding her son to John and other women standing reverently and desperately by her side. The Descent from the Cross was a central motif in Christian art and served both as a devotional object and as inspiration for believers. The relief testifies to the high level of craftsmanship and the deep spiritual expression that was cultivated in this era. Such works were often created for private chapels or as altar decorations in churches. Partly bumped, damaged, anobia infestation.
